Officer Travis Murphy #8474 pays ultimate price

It is with a heavy heart and a weary hand I must inform you of the loss of a fellow Phoenix Police Officer. On May 26, 2010 at approximately 0130 hours Officer Travis Murphy #8474 and his partner of the 72K squad responded to a call for service in the area of 19th Avenue and Fairmont. While on-scene, Officer Murphy sustained several gunshot wounds and later died at a local hospital. Officer Murphy was the father of two and had served the residents on Phoenix for over the past 5 years. The suspect was apprehended thanks to the work of his fellow Phoenix Police Family.

We here at Lodge 2 know he will be missed dearly. Our thought and prayers got to his Wife, Children, family members and his fellow officers who now have to deal with this tragic loss.

Danny Ledezma Martinez, 30, of Tucson, is accused of gunning down Officer Murphy with an automatic rifle. Martinez is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful flight from law enforcement, burglary and misconduct involving weapons.
Fraternally,
Lou Manganiello, President
Fraternal Order of Police
Phoenix Lodge 2

FOP Law Enforcement Views on Arizona SB1070

As the President of the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police I’m offended by the arguments over Arizona Senate Bill 1070, the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act. As a law enforcement officer for over 20 years I find it offensive that most groups are insinuating that Arizona’s professional law enforcement officers would participate in racial profiling and we don’t understand the concept of reasonable suspicion. Arizona’s law enforcement officers know all too well the laws pertaining to racial profiling. We have been under the microscope in the past and have proven repeatedly that the law enforcement officers in Arizona DO NOT and WILL NOT profile any nationality, race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. We are professionals who know and abide by laws.

Hayworth, McCain split police endorsements

Dueling police endorsements for Sen. John McCain and former Congressman J.D. Hayworth, who is challenging McCain in the Republican primary.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, threw its support Monday to Hayworth.

The Arizona Fraternal Order of Police threw its support behind McCain.

Meanwhile, two past presidents and six past board members of PLEA endorsed McCain. PLEA past presidents Jake Jacobsen and Terry Sills said in a joint statement, "Senator McCain helped lead the fight to secure the critically important radio band frequencies for law enforcement when others were lobbying to sell them to for-profit companies. It was Senator McCain who helped secure legislation to prevent Internet access to personal information of those in public safety. Many police officers are veterans and Senator McCain has worked diligently to improve benefits and services for those who not only served our country in the military but now protect their fellow citizens in law enforcement."

President Manganiello Speaks Out.

On June 24th, 2009, while I was working my shift in a marked police car patrolling the streets here in Phoenix, like many of you, I received a group message on the computer in my patrol car. This message was a reminder about the free meal down at the PLEA office for Phoenix Police officers. I remembered seeing the flyers posted at the precinct that promoted the event.
The message sent to my patrol car also reminded me that the meal was for “PLEA MEMBERS ONLY.” This was in the flyer I had seen and reiterated in the computer message. Those of us that belong to the Fraternal Order of Police, working Phoenix Police officers like many of you, we weren’t invited. This helped to send a clear message to many of us. That message is one promoting division within the police department.
